Hydroseeding

What is it? What is hydroseed used for? | Caring for your hydroseed (instructions)

What is Hydroseeding?

Hydroseeding is a planting process that uses a mixture of seed, water, mulch and green dye. It is made in a tank with mixing blades that are mounted usually on trucks or trailers. The green dye is used to be able to see where it has been sprayed and to make sure we have maximum coverage.

This is then sprayed through a hose onto either residential or commercial lawn, slope or land. There is also a binder that is put into the hydroseed to allow it to stick to the ground and grow properly.

Why use Hydroseeding?

Hydroseeding is used many things. We will touch on some of the more popular things.

1. Residential.

Hydroseeding is used for home owners who want to sell a house in a couple of months or planning on selling in the next year. Hydroseed does take time to grow so its best to plan for it and should not be used if your selling the house within the next month.

2. Erosion control.

This is the most popular use of hydroseeding as well as required in some cities. If you have a dirt slope, it is considered a hazard to not have anything on that slope such as erosion control plants or grass. You can hydroseed a slope which will then not allow the slope to give under heavy rain which will then become a potential hazard to your house and family. Using hydroseed is the most cost effective way to prevent financial loss due to slope hazard.

CARING FOR YOUR HYDROSEEDING

Hydroseeding Directions and Care (Turf)

1-15 Days:The golden rule for hydroseeding is to keep the ground moist for a minimum of 30 days, withought producing puddles. During those 30 days germination will occur. The ideal times for watering are 9am , 12pm , and 3pm (do not water at night due to the high risk of fungi).

15 Days (optional) : Lightly fertilize with a low nitrogen fertilizer. (ex. Best 6-20-20 XB can be purchased at hydroscape or John Deere Landscape).

30-45 Days: First mowing takes place ( if you have grass). Lawn should be mowed when 50% of the area is 2"(inches) or taller. Mower must be sharp and free of debris. Continue mowing once per week. Cut back on watering to once per day after the first mowing. Morning watering is preferred.

60- 90 Days: Apply a good quality weed and feed that is approved for use on your grass or ground cover.

Common Mistakes

We encourage absolutely no walking on the newly hydroseeded lawn, this may cause bare spots in the lawn and leave indentions in the soil. Doing so untill the grass has reached its first cutting could make all the differences in an even-looking lawn. Avoid allowing pets to urinate on the lawn as the ammonia from pet urine can potentially stunt the growth of grass in certain areas. Do not lay any type of heavy duty weed and feed until lawn is maturede. Due to high amounts of nitrogen in the fertilizer, it can very well burn the seed and prevent any further germination.

Notes: Wait 1 day for hydroseed to dry before beginning a watering program. Depending on your enviroment and or seed bed prep, weeds may or may not appear. If weeds grow in with hydroseed do not use weed killer or weed and feed untill lawn is mature enough to withstand the treatment.

After grass is established mowing height should be 3 1/4" to 4". Fertilize 3-4 times annually with a good quality fertilizer. Due to the differences in PH leveles and compaction in soil, it is NOT uncommon to have areas that are slow in germination process. Many of these areas will fill in once weekly mowing begins. You must insure that slow germination areas are not due to the lack of water. During cold weather it may take longer to germinate the seed. Hydroseed may splash on walls or sidewalks; this is also a regular occurrence and we do not recommend washing it off with water umtill grass has grown in.

Hydroseeding (ground cover)

20-40 Days:Germination takes place. Water 1, 2 or 3 times a day for 20 to 40 days.

Do not water at night during this time. 7am , 11 am, and 3 pm are the most common water times.

30-60days step (optional): fertilize lightly with low nitrogen fertilizer.

30- 45 Days: you may (should) apply pre-emergent herbicide to the area to prevent future weeds, water only once per day. Early morning watering is preferred.

60-90 Days: apply a good quality weed and feed that is approved for use on your ground cover.

Notes: Wait one day for hydroseed to dry before beginning watering program. Depending on your enviroment and or seed bed prep, weeds may or may not grow with the new plants. If they do, do not use weed killer or weed and feed untill lawn is mature enough to withstand treatment. Fertilize 3 to 4 times a year with good quality fertilizer. Due to different PH levels in soil, it is not uncommon to have areas that are slow to germinate many of these areas will fill in once weekly mwoing begins. You must insure that slow germinating areas are not due to lack of water. During cold weather it may take longer to germinate seed and slower than normal to growth can be expected, and this is a normal situation. Hydroseed is non staining and washed off with water. Hydroseed may splash on sidewalks or on walls, I recommend that you do not clean off withought water untill grass or plants grow in.
